Scagliola marble owes its existence to the grinding stone: most of the processing operations are performed with a piece of grinding stone enclosed in a frame. The material has a distinctive mirror-like surface where the gloss is achieved by the multiple topcoat compaction method. Preserving the classical ancient technology, we make Scagliola of clinker mineral binder with some marble powder using only selected natural materials. The puttying and settlement of the top layer increases the density of Scagliola marble every time. Not every professional can cope with the meticulous and monotonous compaction and polishing process, let alone the need to have artistic taste.
Scagliola marble can be used to reproduce the pattern of natural stones: marble, granite, malachite, onyx, lazurite, Jasper, etc.
The products made of this material are as good as their natural counterparts and even many times better. The hue and saturation of the pattern wholly depend on the architect’s or decorator’s vision of a certain color range.
To protect artificial marble against dirt and water penetration, the smallest pores are sealed with wax. For a glossy surface, not only wax polishes, but also special oil compositions can be used.
Scagliola marble is perfect for decorating architectural elements and for fabricating standalone interior items. For large surfaces, Scagliola marble is made directly on site.
Column installation and restoration
Columns are among the most expressive and in-demand Scagliola-based interior items. Their installability in almost any place without any special conditions and requirements for the footing makes them a top interior design solution. Columns can reproduce the classical column order proportions or follow an original approach conveying the architect’s or designer’s creative concept.
Columns are installed in the interior space by highly skilled installation professionals subject to architectural design specifications.
Columns are installed in the interior space by highly skilled installation professionals subject to architectural design specifications. Hollow columns may be filled or used for the decoration of load-bearing elements. The columns are installed with allowance for possible diffraction shrinkage. If necessary, the gaps between the supporting pillars and the column shafts are filled with a special filler, the technical gaps and holes repaired. Marble columns can be restored even in a hundred or two hundred years.
The ability to fabricate highly advanced and sophisticated items makes Kolonna a leading expert in the restoration and manufacture of architectural elements and surfaces using Scagliola marble.
